Silk
Silk is the
Queen of Textiles.
This pure natural product has amazing and valuable qualities:
Its suppleness, pliancy and elasticity allow silk to move like flowing water; its vibrant colours change with every movement
due to its triangular fiber that reflects the light as a prism.
It is light, strong and beautiful, and its unique tactile quality is sensuous and lustrous;
soft as a sigh.
Silk regulates temperature with its ability to insulate, so it
feels cool in summer and warm in winter.
The scent of silk is magnificent.
It whispers of the exotic, the luxurious and the romantic; it breathes elegance, splendour and mystery.
Just as with wine many factors, such as climate and environmental circumstances influence the production of silk. It is only possible in certain areas in the world with the right climate and soil. Neither the quality nor the quantity of any year’s production can be predicted. The production of silk is time-consuming and labour intensive. There are a wide variety of cultivated silks like pongé, twill, crêpe de Chine, chiffon, mousseline and satin.
SheSilk – handpainted silks and wearable art
In its original form ‘wearable art’ denotes handmade textiles, created from
traditional processes, mostly one-of-a-kind pieces.
Silk, with its splendid qualities is a endless source of inspiration for
me.
The traditional method of fixing special silk dye by hot steam is used for all
my work.
Therefore the silk keeps its suppleness and it can be washed without loosing
much colour. Fine arts techniques transform this refined and superior medium
into a magical visual and tactile adventure.
The results can be either worn as beautiful handmade garments or used
as decorative art as wall or ceiling hangings.
